Allan Sekula's "Reading an Archive: Photography between Labour and Capital" Response

Sekula refers to Shedden's photographic archives as a commercial archives. "One characteristic of photography is that authorship of individual images and the control and ownership of archives do not commonly reside in the same individual". If for instance, an archive was disorganized or seemed very spread out, the viewer might be confused by some of the photographs and relate this to the artist. However, as Sekula says, the author often times has no control over the archive in which their work is presented. Sekula also discusses the commonality of commercial photographers including original negative to younger artists when selling their studios. Being that archives are often historic, artists may work together to dig deeper into history and coming out with better works. Some things we can think about from this reading are: "How does authorship relate to ownership? and How can archivists play a role in the meaning of author's works? Is this always the meaning the author was going for?
