Assignment #2

Social Space as Found and Altered

The goal of my images was to represent the intrusion of upper-class, Winter Park natives in Hannibal Square. Using the church as my main subject, the heart of most black communities, I intended to make it seem as it they had more power over these "intruders" for once. The field in which these photographs were taken was very clearly marked, "church parking only", "no parking", "violators will be towed", etc. I think of these signs as a representation of what Hannibal Square locals might want to say to developers and construction workers who are destroying their past.

The way I used my space in an unaltered way was by visiting the space multiple times, in the morning with a sunrise, during the day, and at nighttime during the dark. The way the light is reflected throughout the image plays a large role in the way it is depicted. The way I altered my space was by placing matchbox cars into the frame. The brand new Tesla matchbox car was meant to represent these "intruders" and the tow truck was meant to represent a local Hannibal Square towing company. I chose these kinds of matchbox cars not to say that a local from Hannibal Square couldn't afford a Tesla or luxury car, but rather to represent its out of place feeling. The light casted through all of these images can also represent the church and the rich spirit that it brings to the community as a whole. All of the images with the matchbox cars placed in them have very minimal light drawn into them, and that is for this reason.

How can light affect the meaning of our photographs?

How does disrupting a space change the way viewers depict that space?

Write a one-two paragraph description of your project. This should include a discussion of what you were trying to convey about your chosen social space of Hannibal Square through your series of imagesand how you intended to visually communicate these themes/ideas to the viewer, as well as what you believe worked well and what you might change or improve if you had more time. Your summary should detail the relationship between the form and content of your final  photographs (i.e., why your mages look the way they do in relation to what you were trying to communicate/evoke - consider compositional strategies, tonal range and quality of light, contrast and focus, angle of view, etc.). You should also discuss your thought process around selecting, sequencing, and arranging your photographs. This should be a thoughtfully considered piece of writing free of typos and grammatical errors, and not an after thought.
